Pre-Owned Schneider Super Symmar 110mm F5.6 Aspheric in Mint condition. This lens has been left with us to sell on behalf of a long-standing and trusted client.

With a huge dinner plate sized image circle of 288mm, the XL 110mm delivers in Christmas dinner platefuls of sharpness, illumination and scarcity. This is a lens whose reputation is well deserved. Schneider introduced the XL lens range in late 1990’s. A new range of lenses offering significantly larger image circles, with improved illumination. Users could use larger movements with less concern for vignetting. The XL 110mm was one of the lenses that proudly stated that it also used Aspherical glass, a lens design that uses a complex concave surface to reduce chromatic abberation and improve image quality. Complex optical designs using conventional optics can often be reduced by using aspherical glass.

Due to the manufacturing complexity, aspherical glass was often costly and produced in limited runs. With improvements in manufacturing processes, it has become much more widely available. Most modern optical lenses use a combination of exotic glasses and aspherical glass to produce highly advanced lens designs of unheard of specifications.

Schneider took full advantage of the optical advancements because just as telling is that the XL 110mm has a 105º coverage. That extra coverage allows for generous amounts of movements when used on a LF camera. Though designed for 4×5″, that extra coverage covers 5×7″ just as adequately.

Users have commented on the quality of the lens with ‘incredible levels of detail’ or ‘amazing sharpness’. It’s a lens that offers a extraordinary level of performance. Compared to other lenses, it’s relatively compact. It’s a modest weight (430g) and enough to be mounted onto even a lightweight field camera, and uses 67mm front filters and even 52mm filters can be screwed onto the back.

All this has elevated the lens from the desirable to must have at all costs category. Anybody who uses 4×5″ or 5×7″ will surely want to experience shooting with this lens in their lifetime.

The lens is in mint condition with no signs of use. It’s has both front and rear caps as well as the original box.  We can’t see any signs of dust or issues with the optics. The Copal 1 shutter has been tested and is working perfectly. Everything feels tight and precise.
